Stop The Bark

I have a secret superpower: I am a dog whisperer.

When a dog begins barking or growling during play, your first instinct might be to raise your voice or call them firmly to get their attention. However, this can sometimes amplify their reactivity because they sense your energy and might interpret it as a sign to stay on high alert. Instead, by speaking in a low whisper, you create a calming environment that encourages them to match your tone. Your dog perceives your whisper as non-threatening and soothing, which helps shift their focus and bring down their energy.

Using a whisper voice to help a reactive dog calm down during play might seem counterintuitive, but it’s an effective technique that works wonders with many dogs. Reactive dogs often feel anxious or overstimulated, which can lead them to bark or growl excessively. By using a gentle, whispering tone, you can help reduce the arousal level in your dog, signaling that there is no threat or reason for alarm.

To implement this technique, wait until your dog starts to show signs of reactivity, like barking or growling. Lower your voice to a whisper and begin to tell them a story. Use your creativity - the more interested you are in the story, the more your dog will pay attention to see why it’s interesting. Maintain steady, slow breathing, as dogs pick up on their owner's physical cues as well. Avoid eye contact initially, as some reactive dogs interpret direct eye contact as confrontational. Instead, focus on creating a relaxed aura that your dog can sense and follow.

In our household, my highly reactive dog sounds terrifying when playing tug with my husband. When I play tug, I softly tell “secrets” (just neutral stories) and she continues to tug but stops all growing and barking. Personally, I think my dog is just a gossip who wants to hear all of the details. My mother taught me this technique in the context of human babies. Want them to (please) stop crying? Start a one-sided conversation, very softly, and they will stop crying because they want to hear what you are saying.

Loving Our Reactive Dog

When we adopted our sweet pup, she came with a vague warning about ‘needing structure.’ We found it odd that they repeated - several times - that she could not be returned if things didn’t work out. My response was “family doesn’t get returned.” Frankly, I was miffed - who would return a dog?

Family doesn’t get returned.
— Me

It didn’t take long to learn why other people had returned her. She was “reactive.” We studied with multiple trainers and learned everything we could to help her. It turns out that she was misunderstood. She was looking for protection and structure but had received confusing behavior from previous humans and felt unloved. There were definitely a few moments when I wondered if we could help her but I always returned to our promise to love her and protect her.

She has been transformed into a happy, charming pup who is very gentle and sweet. She has learned to trust that we will protect her, allowing her to pay less attention to every sound for potential threats. She is currently sleeping on my feet, confident that she is loved. She knows that we reward gentle, loving behavior with attention and affection. She is happy, wonderful family member.

Your dog can learn to calm down and be gentle as well. We only used positive reinforcement and never used physical punishment. It actually defeats the entire purpose. You want your dog to trust you - not fear you. To get started, we recommend attending a free webinar to see if the training from Doggie Dan can help your pup.
