Glow With The Flow: Bioluminescent Bays
Bioluminescent bays are an enchanting spectacle some term as nature's glowing waters. Water glows with a mystical blue-green light to create a surreal and magical experience. But you'll have to be selective to see it with your own eyes because this natural phenomenon occurs in a few select locations around the world. Whether kayaking, swimming, or in a boat tour, the best time to try to catch this magic is in warmer months during a new moon or on nights when the moon is not very bright.
To nerd out a bit, allow me to provide some more detail. This glow is actually caused by microorganisms called dinoflagellates, which are tiny plankton that emit light when disturbed (bioluminescence). The glowing light is produced from a chemical reaction involving luciferin (light-emitting compound) and luciferase (enzyme). So, when the water is stirred by waves or even a fish, the microorganisms light up and create this glowing effect.
Maybe the bioluminescent bays will inspire me. When I get disturbed, I certainly don't glow. Luckily, these magical bays do.
This phenomenon reminds us of the wonders of our planet and the importance of preserving its unique and fragile ecosystems. Perhaps seeing these glowing waters should be an add on the bucket list.
