Flying Pies

Go long! Spin it. The frisbee seems like such a simple thing but did you ever stop to think how did this thing come to be anyway?

The concept of the frisbee traces back to the 1920s and 1930s. College students, particularly in the northeastern United States, used to pass the time by tossing empty pie tins. Interestingly, these tins were from the Frisbie Pie Company. So these college students would yell "Frisbie!" before throwing the pie tins (because nobody enjoys getting hit in the head by a frisbee).

The actual frisbee came from Fred Morrison. In 1938, he and his girlfriend used to toss a popcorn can lid at the beach and it glided through the air.  Folks loved it so he produced the first plastic flying saucer disc, initially called the "Flyin-Saucer" and when a toy company named Wham-O bought the rights to it in mid-1950s, they rebranded it as the "Frisbee" to give a nod to those original pie tins.

If only I thought of this in college. What was I doing back then? Nonetheless, I can still enjoy the frisbee but maybe I'll think of it as a pie tin now, whether playing frisbee golf or just tossing it around.
