Decked Out in Dog Days of Summer

The summer is finally here and it's not too late to deck your deck out. Create an oasis that is tailored for you and your cool canine. Check out these tips.
  • Safety sniffs first - Make sure your deck is safe and secure for your dog. Look for any gaps or loose boards where tiny paws might get stuck. Examine your deck for any screws that need another pounding. If your deck is elevated, consider the height of the railing for daring doggies. If you have a smaller dog, nail in some pet mesh for peace of mind.
  • Furry feet on fleet - Lay down outdoor rugs or mats to help protect your dog's sensitive paws.
  • Cool corners - Many dogs adore the sun but it's important to have a cool spot or two for them. Think umbrella, canopy, or a pop-up tent. Make it inviting with an outdoor dog bed and maybe a cooling blanket.
  • Splish Splash - Set up a doggie pool or a splash pad. Even if they don't hang in it, some dogs walk through it to cool down. There are round hard pools but I prefer the softer collapsible pools not only for storage but also because it's level and soft for their feet.
  • Hydration station - Hydration is key, so set out a bowl of water or a fountain and occasionally add ice. If you plan, you can freeze some dog treats and water and then give that as an edible cube.
  • Bug off! - You know who else likes summer? Bugs! While some may be annoying, some may be harmful to your dog. You can try pet-safe insect repellents and citronella candles.
  • Game on - Ordain your space with some outdoor dog toys like frisbees and chew toys. If your dog is up for it, try an agility course with tunnels and hurdles.
  • Yappy hour - It doesn't have to be 5:00... it's yappy hour somewhere.  Snack it up with a frozen kong or an interactive puzzle toy. Make frozen yogurt treats or freeze peanut butter and banana and spread on a lick mat. Whatever your dog can have.

Incorporate these tips to deck out your summer haven for both you and your dog. So scoop your sunglasses, hit that sunscreen, and be in bliss with your furry family member by your side. Keep it chill!
